The capital'sephemeral terraces will be open for an extra hour this summer. From June 21, 2025, the symbolic date marked by the Fête de la Musique and the start of summer, and until September 14, the end of the Paris en Seine festivities, these seasonal installations will benefit from an extended curfew of 11pm, compared with 10pm previously.
The City of Paris has responded favorably to requests from restaurant owners, who are facing persistent economic difficulties. Nicolas Bonnet-Ouladj, Anne Hidalgo's deputy for commerce, explained that this measure had emerged after consultation with the industry, which had expressed strong demand.
Around 5,000 summer terraces are concerned, of which 2,700 operators currently have an active authorization. These terraces, originally made possible to compensate for closures during the health crisis, have been made permanent in 2021.
This decision follows on from the experiment carried out during thesummer of 2024, when terraces were exceptionally authorized to open until midnight during the Olympic Games. The results were generally positive, with few complaints of nuisance, so the city decided to take a further step this summer.
Rémi Calmon, director of SNEG & CO, a union representing a large number of LGBTQ+ bars and restaurants, welcomes this step forward, while pointing out that the 10pm hour was restrictive for establishments that only catered.
While the city is making opening hours more flexible, it is also planning to tighten controls: permits, which until now have been tacitly renewed, will now be subject to more rigorous scrutiny. Operators who have been sanctioned for nuisance or non-compliance with opening hours will have to submit a new application.
Another point of vigilance: drinking standing up on terraces, which is strictly forbidden. This is the type of behavior that generates the most noise, according to the Town Hall, which intends to step up controls.
By extending the opening of terraces by one hour, the mayor's office is demonstrating its determination to support a sector that is crucial to the Parisian economy, while at the same time trying to limit tensions with local residents. After the experiments carried out during the Games, this measure marks a new stage in the adaptation of the uses of public space in Paris, between comfort for residents and support for restaurant professionals.
In short, we're going to be able to enjoy the ephemeral terraces a little more in the evening!
